The LTI 1.3 integration connects any LMS that supports LTI 1.3 (Learning Tools Interoperability, the standard that lets an LMS open external tools) to your organisation's Uptale environment. Learners open Uptale experiences (immersive training content) from the LMS without a separate Uptale password, and their score goes back to the LMS. Uptale sets it up for your environment, with your LMS team.
About this integration
What it does
- Learners sign in once. They open the experience from the LMS and arrive on its launch page, already identified. Their Uptale account is created at their first launch, with the Learner role on the Uptale workspaces (groups of experiences) chosen during the setup.
- Course authors pick Uptale content from the LMS, if the LMS supports content selection (LTI Deep Linking): a window lists the published experiences of those workspaces.
- Always up to date. The LMS links to the experience in Uptale: when a creator publishes a new version, learners get it with nothing to upload again.
Moodle, Canvas and Inversive have their own cards: see Moodle (LTI), Canvas (LTI) and Inversive (LTI). For xAPI and other options, see Connect to your LMS.
What goes back to your LMS
When a learner's session ends (they finish or close the experience), Uptale sends the LMS a score, with the activity marked as completed. The score is the number of stars the learner won, out of the stars available in the experience: its creator sets them with the experience's objectives (see Objectives, stars & success score). When content is added through content selection, the LMS also receives the maximum score.
With the Send score only if success is reached option, a session that doesn't meet the experience's success criteria sends nothing to the LMS.
The LMS only receives this summary. The detailed results (path, answers, session reports) stay in Uptale's reports: see Data tracked & LMS data.
What you need
- An LMS that can register an LTI 1.3 external tool, and an administrator who can do it.
- For scores: the LMS's grade service (LTI Assignment and Grade Services) turned on for the tool.
- For content selection: LTI Deep Linking support in the LMS (optional).
- The list of Uptale workspaces whose experiences the LMS should offer.
Set it up
How the setup works
The LTI 1.3 card is set up by Uptale: on the card, your Environment Administrator sees To set up this integration, please contact support@uptale.io.
- Your Environment Administrator contacts support@uptale.io with the name of your LMS and the workspaces to open to it.
- Uptale sends your LMS team the addresses to register Uptale as an LTI 1.3 tool, including a redirect URI specific to your configuration.
- Your LMS team registers the tool and sends back the values listed below.
- Uptale finishes the configuration and confirms when it's active.
The addresses Uptale gives follow this pattern (EU instance; on the US instance they start with https://my.us.uptale.io, see Hosting: EU and US instances):
| Tool setting | Uptale value |
|---|---|
| Tool URL | https://my.uptale.io |
| OpenID Connect login initiation URL | https://my.uptale.io/lti/authenticate |
| Public keyset (JWKS) URL | https://my.uptale.io/.well-known/lti-jwks.json |
| Deep Linking (content selection) URL | https://my.uptale.io/lti/deeplinkselect |
| Redirect URI | Given by Uptale for your configuration |
What your LMS team prepares
Once the tool is registered, the LMS generates the identifiers Uptale needs. Send them to Uptale:
| Field on the Uptale card | Value from your LMS |
|---|---|
| Issuer | The platform ID (issuer) of your LMS |
| Application ID | The client ID generated for the Uptale tool |
| Keyset URL | The LMS's public keyset (JWKS) URL |
| Token endpoint | The LMS's OAuth 2.0 access token URL |
| Authorization endpoint | The LMS's OpenID Connect authentication request URL |
| Role assignment | The Uptale workspaces where people coming from the LMS get the Learner role |
Also tell Uptale whether your LMS supports content selection, and how it handles grades: Uptale adjusts the card's options with you (Get launch page URL from claims, Use line item URL, Send score only if success is reached).
Share the learner's name and email with the tool in your LMS's privacy settings: without them, learners appear in Uptale's reports without their name.
Use it
Add an experience to a course
- With content selection: add the Uptale tool to the course, open its content selection, choose a workspace under Available workspaces, pick the experience and click Select. The title, description and maximum score are filled in.
- Without content selection: add the Uptale tool with the link to the experience's launch page as its target. Copy this link from the experience in Uptale, or ask a creator or trainer for it: see Launch page.
Note: Only published experiences can be added and played. Set the experience's objectives and stars before adding it: an experience with no stars to win gives the LMS no maximum score.
How learners launch an experience
Learners open the Uptale item in their LMS course. The experience's launch page opens, with the learner already signed in to Uptale. From there, they play in their web browser, or on a VR headset with the experience launch code shown on the page: see All the ways to play.
Limits
- Only published experiences of the workspaces listed under Role assignment can be added and played. See Publish an experience.
- Role assignment only applies to new connections. People who already came from the LMS before a workspace was added don't get it automatically: an administrator gives them access from the workspace's Access management tab.
- Sessions launched from the LMS don't count towards Uptale programs: a program only counts the sessions launched from the program itself.
Troubleshooting
The card says to contact support@uptale.io
You see To set up this integration, please contact support@uptale.io. This is expected: Uptale sets up this integration. Write to support@uptale.io.
The content selection lists no workspace or no experience
The workspace isn't under Role assignment yet, or its experiences aren't published. Ask Uptale to add the workspace; authors who already came from the LMS before the change may need access from the workspace's Access management tab.
"Session has expired or was not launched correctly"
You see Session has expired or was not launched correctly. Please try again. The content selection window stays valid for one hour after it's opened from the LMS. Close it and open the content selection again.
"Your platform does not support Uptale's LTI launch"
You see Your platform does not support Uptale's LTI launch (ltiResourceLink, window). Please contact your administrator. Uptale adds each experience as an LTI resource link that opens in a window, and your LMS's content selection doesn't accept that. Add the experience with its launch page link instead, or check the tool's settings with your LMS administrator.
A learner sees "Oops, unauthorized access"
The experience isn't published, or the learner has no access to its workspace. Publish the experience, or give the learner access from the workspace's Access management tab.
No score appears in the LMS
The score is sent when the session ends. Check that the tool's grade service is on in your LMS, that the experience has stars to win, and that Send score only if success is reached isn't holding back a failed session.
