The Canvas LTI integration connects Canvas to your organisation's Uptale environment with LTI 1.3 (Learning Tools Interoperability, the standard that lets an LMS open external tools). Learners open Uptale experiences (immersive training content) from Canvas without a separate Uptale password, and their score goes back to Canvas. This integration is available on request: Uptale sets it up for your environment, with your Canvas administrator.
About this integration
What it does
- Learners sign in once. They open the experience from Canvas and arrive on its launch page, already identified. Their Uptale account is created at their first launch, with the Learner role on the Uptale workspaces (groups of experiences) chosen during the setup.
- Course designers pick Uptale content from Canvas: a selection window lists the published experiences of those workspaces.
- Always up to date. Canvas links to the experience in Uptale: when a creator publishes a new version, learners get it with nothing to upload again.
This card is for Canvas only. For another LMS that supports LTI 1.3, see LTI 1.3.
What goes back to Canvas
When a learner's session ends (they finish or close the experience), Uptale sends Canvas a score, with the activity marked as completed. The score is the number of stars the learner won, out of the stars available in the experience: its creator sets them with the experience's objectives (see Objectives, stars & success score). When content is added, Canvas also receives the maximum score.
With the Send only success score option, a session that doesn't meet the experience's success criteria sends nothing to Canvas.
Canvas only receives this summary. The detailed results (path, answers, session reports) stay in Uptale's reports: see Data tracked & LMS data.
What you need
- A Canvas administrator who can register an LTI 1.3 tool (developer key) and make it available in your courses.
- The list of Uptale workspaces whose experiences Canvas should offer.
- The Canvas LTI integration enabled for your environment by Uptale.
Set it up
How the setup works
- Your Environment Administrator contacts support@uptale.io to request the Canvas integration, with the workspaces to open to Canvas.
- Uptale sends your Canvas administrator the addresses to register Uptale as an LTI 1.3 tool.
- Your Canvas administrator registers the tool and sends back the identifier listed below.
- Uptale finishes the configuration and confirms when it's active. The Canvas LTI card then appears on your environment's Integration tab, with To set up this integration, please contact support@uptale.io. for any later change.
What your Canvas administrator prepares
| Field on the Uptale card | Value |
|---|---|
| Application ID | The client ID of the LTI key created for Uptale in Canvas |
| Role assignment | The Uptale workspaces where people coming from Canvas get the Learner role |
The other connection fields of the card come already filled in with the addresses of Canvas hosted by Instructure, and can't be changed (read-only):
| Field on the Uptale card | Pre-filled value |
|---|---|
| Platform ID | https://canvas.instructure.com |
| Keyset URL | https://sso.canvaslms.com/api/lti/security/jwks |
| Authorization endpoint | https://sso.canvaslms.com/api/lti/authorize_redirect |
| Token endpoint | https://canvas.instructure.com/login/oauth2/token |
Share the learner's name and email with the tool in Canvas: without them, learners appear in Uptale's reports without their name.
Use it
Add an experience to a course
- In the Canvas course, add content with the Uptale external tool.
- In the Uptale selection window, choose a workspace under Available workspaces, pick the experience, then click Select.
- Back in Canvas, the title and description are filled in, and the maximum score is the number of stars available in the experience.
Note: Only published experiences are listed. Set the experience's objectives and stars before adding it: an experience with no stars to win gives Canvas no maximum score.
How learners launch an experience
Learners open the Uptale item in their Canvas course. The experience's launch page opens in a new window, with the learner already signed in to Uptale. From there, they play in their web browser, or on a VR headset with the experience launch code shown on the page: see All the ways to play.
Limits
- Only published experiences of the workspaces listed under Role assignment can be added and played. See Publish an experience.
- Role assignment only applies to new connections. People who already came from Canvas before a workspace was added don't get it automatically: an administrator gives them access from the workspace's Access management tab.
- Sessions launched from Canvas don't count towards Uptale programs: a program only counts the sessions launched from the program itself.
Troubleshooting
The Canvas LTI card isn't on the Integration tab
The card only appears once Uptale has enabled the integration for your environment. Write to support@uptale.io.
The selection window lists no workspace or no experience
The workspace isn't under Role assignment yet, or its experiences aren't published. Ask Uptale to add the workspace; designers who already came from Canvas before the change may need access from the workspace's Access management tab.
"Session has expired or was not launched correctly"
You see Session has expired or was not launched correctly. Please try again. The selection window stays valid for one hour after it's opened from Canvas. Close it and open it again.
A learner sees "Oops, unauthorized access"
The experience isn't published, or the learner has no access to its workspace. Publish the experience, or give the learner access from the workspace's Access management tab.
No score appears in Canvas
The score is sent when the session ends. Check that the experience has stars to win, and that Send only success score isn't holding back a failed session.
